Home Generators: Common Questions

Standby vs portable generator?

Standby units start automatically, run on natural gas or propane, and power the whole panel through a transfer switch. Portables cost a tenth as much but need manual setup, fuel, and a transfer switch to be safe. Never backfeed a portable through a dryer outlet.

What size do I need?

A load calculation decides — typically 10–14kW covers a wet-side home's essentials, 18–24kW runs everything including electric heat. Oversizing wastes money; undersizing trips on the first cold morning.

How do I check a company's license?

Ask for their Washington L&I contractor number and verify it at secure.lni.wa.gov/verify — active license, bond, and insurance. Listings above with a green badge are ones we've already matched to an active license in state records.
